Why it matters:

Setting up a my Social Security account is a key step in managing your long-term financial picture. It allows you to monitor your earnings history, check your Social Security Statement, and estimate future retirement, disability, or survivor benefits.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Go to the official SSA website: (make clickable link inside a button near the end of all the pre-approved text)
    Link to: https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount
  • Click “Create an Account”
This will take you to the sign-up page. Click the blue “Create an Account” button again.
  • Choose Your Login Method
SSA now uses login.gov or ID.me to verify identity. Choose either option (both are secure government partners).
    • If you already have a gov or ID.me account (for FAFSA, TSA PreCheck, IRS, etc.), you can use the same login.
    • If not, you’ll be guided through setting one up — including verifying your identity using personal info, photo ID, and possibly a selfie.
  • Verify Your Identity
You’ll need to confirm your identity with:
    • Full name, date of birth, and Social Security number
    • Email and phone number
    • A valid driver’s license or state ID
    • Sometimes a credit record question or W-2/tax info for additional verification
  • Create Your SSA Profile
Once identity is confirmed, you’ll set up a username/password and complete the registration. From your dashboard, you can:
    • View your Social Security statement
    • Track earnings history
    • Estimate future benefits
    • Request documents
